The most delicious eateries appear in the heart of Dongguan city. Located down a sleepy Dongping Road lies Zhao Jiu restaurant, guaranteed to take you on a journey through old Hong Kong by means of culinary extraordinaire!
Stepping into the restaurant felt like a flashback to the 90s. The owners were inspired by retro aesthetics, and it can be noted in every detail: posters of Hong Kong actors and singers, tube TVs, music and movie cassettes and an old-school console Dendy.
Armed with traditional Hong Kong milk tea with teddy bear-shaped ice, we were ready to begin sampling their food. First, we tried mixed snacks with curry and then ordered rice with curry beef. Both dishes engrossed us till the plates were empty. The velvety, rich curry sauce is unquestionably the pride of the restaurant.
The signature main course dish was rice with eel. In all honesty, I was amazed by the affordable price and large size of the fish that they served. Alongside this, we tried pasta with chicken and cream sauce. This simple yet nourishing dish had an unusual flavor, as it was sprinkled with pieces of seaweed. Finally, the dessert—French toast with condensed milk and tiny pieces of butter on top—ended this dining experience beautifully.
The uniqueness of Zhao Jiu HK restaurant lies in its simplicity and nostalgic setting. If you are seeking exceptional Cantonese cuisine, watch the video with Robin, Natalie and Billy.
