On a plain old Thursday night, the Yomao Shop (有冇商店) was nearly packed at 9 p.m. While the physical shop is small, the cozy atmosphere attracted many locals seeking a nighttime hideaway.
As we entered this unique bar, it was impossible not to gawk at the massive fridge in the back, where a wide range of local and imported bottled craft beers adorned the shelves. Surprisingly, most of the craft beers were sold at affordable prices between 20 RMB to 30 RMB. Appealing to young adults, Yomao Shop also serves trendy cocktails—a tiny bottle of liquor inserted into a glass of juice from the top corner. A popular option at the bar is peach juice with a small bottle of Chivas Regal whisky.
The bosses, Junon and his partner, started Yomao Shop because they wanted to open a relaxing spot for their group of friends to hang out. Because of the two owners’ storytelling habits, their customers often reflect the same love for sharing stories. It’s common to see strangers joining different tables of people, eventually creating a large group filled with eruptive laughter and loud clashes of drinks following a “ganbei!” An immersive culture isn’t easily established, but Yomao Shop has surely accomplished this with ease.
