Thursday, May 21 was an evening few can forget. At around 10 pm, a storm hit towns in Dongguan, coupled with lightning and serious flooding that lasted until 4 am on May 22.
The previous day saw tragedy when, in a separate afternoon rain and hailstorm, nine people lost their lives, according to the Provincial Emergency Management Office.
The towns of Wanjiang, Guangcheng, Shatian, Machong and Qingxi saw some of the worst flooding. Dongcheng and Nancheng, along with Houjie and Humen, saw a lot of basement flooding, which destroyed vehicles parked in underground parking lots.
A total of 148 people were injured, including 11 who were seriously injured.
Dongguan’s Meteorological Observatory issued an orange signal warning of hail and rainstorms at 4 pm on May 21, which helped people and businesses to brace themselves for that night’s impact. Network providers also sent out a series of warning messages.
City officials worked to manage, contain damage and fix infrastructure wherever necessary.
