In mid-April, Dongguan ranked as one of the nine megacities in China with more than 6.85 million people, surpassing provincial capital cities such as Nanjing and Hangzhou. According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People’s Republic of China, cities that have more than 10 million permanent urban residents are defined as super-megacities, Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Tianjin fall in this category. Cities with an urban population between 5 and 10 million are megacities.
Two years ago, Dongguan became a new first-tier city according to the five aspect criteria: concentration of commercial resources, importance as a transport hub, urban vitality, lifestyle diversity and future potential.
On April 20, the Dongguan City Development and Reform Bureau officially issued the Dongguan City Population Development Planning 2020-2035, in which the population is predicted to reach 9.6 million in 2025 and up to 10.2 million in 2030.
