The Humen Bridge connecting Dongguan and Guangzhou experienced abnormal shaking on May 5, causing the Bridge Administration and Traffic Department to prohibit traffic from crossing.
A group of experts held a video conference on May 5 saying they are investigating the cause of the shaking, which significantly lessened by May 6.
The experts said shaking is normal for suspension bridges under special wind conditions, which they attribute as the most likely cause. The main structure of the Humen bridge is not damaged, according to the Guangdong Transportation Group.
A detailed report by the Guangdong Transportation Group will be released after the investigation is complete. The bridge, which celebrated its 20 years anniversary three years ago, is currently closed and those traveling between Dongguan and Guangzhou are encouraged to take alternative routes.
