Holly’s is fast becoming one of the most popular places to be seen in town. Even though you may have visited before, there are perhaps a few things you didn’t know about this local attraction. Well, I’m here to educate you my fellow Dongguaners, starting with the menu, which I will admit is quite extensive for a bar. I would like to shed some light on the wide array of dishes serving up cuisine from China, Mexico, Germany and Italy. If the food has not piqued your interest, there’s also a steady supply of good music, courtesy of the in-house band. The food coupled with the music creates an inviting atmosphere, urging you to spend a great deal of time within the hallowed confines of Holly’s.
They have numerous classic and signature cocktails, which will exceed any of your expectations. Settling with the first drink, a delicious and refreshing Goose Nest made of Grey Goose vodka, lemon tea, sugar, grapefruit syrup, maraschino liqueur, lime and tons of ice. The way the bartender, Owen, created this cocktail was nothing short of remarkable. A perfect combination of sweet and tart juices, a touch of rum, an addictive underlying creamy sweetness and a dash or two of bitters.
The second drink was called Ho Smoke Perfect, and perfect it was, made with Single Malt Aberfeldy, Bacardi rum, Benedictine liqueur and a black olive on top. The bartender served this particular drink under a glass bell jar with smoke trapped on the inside. The nose on this cocktail reminded me of winter, sweet custard with ripe fruits and a subtle dash of wooden smokiness. You get that oaky sting on the tip of your tongue. The presentation of the drink is magnificent, however, it’s not my cup of tea, but it’s an excellent choice for all your whiskey lovers out there.
Between the two cocktails we induldged in a Kamikaze shot made of vodka, triple sec and lime juice. This easy to make shooter is perfect for knocking back quickly and getting the party started.
My only slight niggle is that at times the music is too loud, making it difficult to have a chat inside the bar (there’s plenty of outdoor seating available as well if you want a quieter environment). Holly’s has happy hour every day from 4 pm to 8 pm for designated drinks at half-price and every night after midnight shots for only 10 RMB.
