Coming to Dongguan on a mission to give parents advice on how to get back into their child’s life, HERE! introduces our latest columnist Sandy Sinn. Find out who she is as a mom, educator, writer and parenting coach.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, but educated in the U.K. and in the U.S., I have traveled the world and to different parts of China yet have never lived in China before. I have always wanted to experience life in here and not just as a visitor. So, when the opportunity for schooling and joining the DG Dragon Baseball team came up for my 12 years old son, I knew it was too good of a chance to miss. During my time in Dongguan, I started working as a Parenting Coach and provide parenting workshops and private consultations to families. The best way to describe myself would be as follows: a mother, a wife, an educator, a writer-in-progress and a lifelong learner.
I am a full-time mother.
I have spent the past 26 years as more than a caretaker for my three children to guide them through life. None of my children go or have ever gone to tutoring centers. I have always filled that role. I am their driver, so none of them take the school bus. When we travel around the world, I am their tour guide. We are a family of athletes, and I am their coach. I love my full-time job as a mother because to me, parenting is a lifelong career, and the pay-off is far better than any high paying corporate career.
I am an educator.
Spending the past 15 years as a distance learner, I earned my bachelor’s and two master’s degrees in the fields of psychology and education. I am an advocate of lifelong learning, so, to me, learning has no limits regarding age. I graduated with my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing when I was 49 years old. I am currently working towards my professional development in positive psychology with The School of Positive Psychology (TSPP). I truly believe if we have the desire and curiosity to learn, ask a question and understand how knowledge can transform and inspire lives, nothing can stop us. I am planning to do my Ph.D. in the next few years, and I will reach an age that qualifies me as a grandmother.
If we have the desire and curiosity to learn, ask a question and understand how knowledge can transform and inspire lives, nothing can stop us.
I am a writer-in-progress.
I have always loved the written word, and I also believe everyone has a story or two inside them to tell. I took the plunge to return to school when I was in my late forties so I can learn the trade of being a writer. Writing is a therapy and a way for me to express my creativity. I also believe stories change lives, inspire generations and bring hope to others. I am now working on my memoirs and a novel about a young girl’s struggle with racism.
I am a parenting and teen coach.
Not only am I my children’s teacher but serve as a mentor to their friends as well. My passion for teaching and mentoring young people has grown over the years, and I believe my wealth of experiences and lessons learned in raising my children is an asset to fellow parents. My positive parenting and teen workshops are based on the theory of positive psychology. I am here to walk-the-walk with parents and teens, be a guide to find their character strengths and utilize these strengths so they can live a purposefully driven lives. True happiness comes NOT from any material goods but finding that peace and balance within.
My wish has become my mission and my mission is to combine my academic knowledge in positive psychology and my personal experiences to enlighten fellow parents on how and why positive parenting is key to raising a well-rounded child.
