A 21-year-old man’s heartbeat stopped and he was eventually revived after 72 hours’ emergency rescue.
Seeing Zheng chatting with his friend on February 11, it’s hard to believe that he lost his heartbeat for almost 72 hours. Back to 8:09 am on December 20, 2017, he was found lying in his dormitory not breathing and without a heartbeat. Medical staff kept doing CPR, as well as Endotracheal intubation mechanical ventilation, adrenaline injection, and multiple electric shock defibrillation for him once they arrived. However, these had no effect at all.
Zheng was swiftly transferred to the ICU in Puji branch of Dongguan People’s Hospital. During that time, staff insisted on doing thoracic heart pressure for him with V-A ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) mode, to maintain his blood circulation and partly replace his lung. At the same time, they treated him with mechanical ventilation, mild hypothermia brain recovery and so on. However, Zheng just kept ventricular fibrillation without his heart beating.
At 9 am on December 23, medical staff members carried out plenty of initial preparation before electric shock defibrillation was given to him. Luckily by some miracle, it worked and following that his body function continued to improve.
