Uber PRD Woes

Taxi service Uber has finally came to Dongguan, but the move looks unlikely to ending its teething problems in the Pearl River Delta. In April 2015, officials from Guangzhou’s transport, public security and industry and commerce bureaus raided Uber offices, claiming the company did not have the proper business registration to operate in the city. Five Uber drivers were arrested in Hong Kong in August for operating without a hire car permit and driving without proper insurance. In September, Shenzhen authorities summoned Uber executives to its municipal transport committee to tell them they were technically illegal and that their private drivers were engaged in illegal transport activities and the reaping illicit of profits. Though hailed for its convenience, Uber has long been mired in controversy for their aggressive expansion, operating outside taxi regulation rules, and creating anger amongst local taxi drivers.
