Over a hundred local taxi drivers gathered in front of Dongguan People’s Letter and Calls Office in Central Square to express their displeasure with the city’s many ‘black taxis’, December 30. Yu Baokun, the leader of the group, told HERE!, “Our income has gone down from 4,000 RMB to 2,000 RMB per month these past two years and it is because of black taxis.” Unlicensed taxis provide huge competition to licensed drivers in the city, particularly bus and train stations. More often than not black taxis don’t use meters and charge a lot more than a licensed fare. There have been several recent reports of black taxi fighters attacking and beating licensed taxi drivers in disputes over the stealing of cutomers from each other.
