Got Game

Slamming the court with competitive spirit and charitable design, the latest Haven of Hope fundraiser will pit teams of three in a single day basketball tournament. Beginning at 9 a.m. on June 1, two brackets will be formed, one for men and another for women in the 3-on-3 matches.

“We are tentatively planning on the tournament to be in the New World Garden area, but have not yet confirmed which location,” said Josh Kempf in an e-mail. Kempf sits on the board at HOH, an active Dongguan charity dedicated to working with state registered orphanages providing care to children in need. He assumes that the indoor courts on the second floor of the Buckingham Hotel, their facilities located at the garden’s Dongcheng East Road gate, will be available for the event.

A first of its kind event for Dongguan, the tournament allows teams of four, providing for one substitute player, to sign up at both TLC International School locations and the Treasures of Hope thrift store in Dongcheng Walking Street beginning on May 6. Kempf suggests that participants sign up via e-mail at hohtournament@gmail.com and pay the day of the event. A registration fee of RMB 400 per team will include event T-shirts and registration gifts with all proceeds going to the Haven of Hope Children’s Home. “Day of registration will not be available,” said Kempf.
