One Last Look - Pre-Olympic Beijing
Greg Lypka

“We Are Ready” is a talk show currently being aired in Beijing. It has two hosts, seen seated with the words “We are Ready” in English very clearly displayed behind them. The exact subject of discussion wasn’t discernable, other than it was Olympics related. Later, the “We are Ready” radio jingle came on while in a taxi. With the construction done and the games imminent, Beijing talks, sings and chants with confidence. But as those three eights get closer and closer to lining up, “We are Ready” will very soon become, “We have Begun.”

High Tunes For High Places - The Song Maker

You would be hard-pressed to find a starving artist in Dongguan – it’s those who follow the promise of an opportunity to make a living with their art that migrate here from across the country. For starving artists, there are certainly cheaper places to live (and starve)…and some might argue, certainly more appreciative ones. When it comes to Wang Qi however, such an argument is superfluous – although a fervid discussion about what constitutes a ‘true’ artist and whether, or how, commercial art can be reconciled with ‘from-the-heart’ art inevitably arises when he speaks about his work, somehow the person Wang Qi himself, with his winning smile and diplomatic sense, a genuine poetic vein and an undeniable knack for producing a hit song in less than an hour, already provides an absolutely plausible answer…if one is willing to tweak preconceived definitions.
