Expat Bars Closing & Growing

Unfortunately, disappointment hits DG around town with Winners English Pub announcing its upcoming closure. Bringing Hengli Town and Dongguan some of the best food, drinks and service, the team had this to say: “Despite several months of trying to contact our landlord to discuss renewing our lease, he has finally demanded the building back with almost no notice, so he can open his own Western restaurant. While we would love to move, the reality is that without a suitable location being available in the next few weeks, it will not be viable to do that.”

Since opening three years ago, Winners has built one of the best nightlife spots for expats living in northeast Dongguan and has collected a good group of regulars. “I don’t mind not making money, I just don’t like losing it for reasons we can do nothing about,” confessed Steve Powell, one of the owners. The bar will be closed in May, so head out and check out Winners soon, if you haven’t already.

On the other side of the city, there’s good news for Houjie as Irene’s Bar has relocated to a larger premise, just 200 meters away, and closer to the Sheraton Dongguan Hotel. A nice second floor will be dedicated to events, music, BBQ, private parties and more. The grand opening is expected in April, but the bar is already open for service. “We think our customers, old and new, will enjoy the difference,” said owner Marcus Hemopo.
