Drowning in Pleasure: Someone Special Brewpub

1216_bar-reviewIt took us a while before we met Someone Special. We passed by the place a couple of times before realizing that it was not a liquor store, but an undiscovered gem wedged in the Dongcheng drag.

Run by a couple that happen to love beer and each other, this place is an import heaven. Though it opened this past summer with a staggeringly wide range of beers, it still seems to be a rather unknown spot in the midst of the local nightlife.

According to their hours, the drinking starts at 6 pm and finishes “late.” Still, this doesn’t seem to be completely fixed. Just to make sure you won’t have to wait around for your favorite drinks, come a bit later. We got there around 7 pm and they were just opening their doors.

By the way, don’t let the little vehement dog (aptly named IPA) running around inside scare you away. Once you are in, he won’t bite you, I promise.

After getting through the furry security system, we sat down at the bar and started taking in their wide selection. I think it’s not an exaggeration to say that they have one of the most impressive selection of beers that we have seen in town, so far. What we missed when trying to figure out where to start was a proper introduction to all the different options and tips on what would best fit our tastes.

However, this is only due to our poor Chinese knowledge and not for a lack of hospitality. Later on, when Song Ge—the other half of the pair—arrived, he was more than happy to answer any of our questions.

We started off with a HopWired IPA, which was sweet and all about the hops. It proved to be my favorite. We also tried Two Hearted Ale, Epic Hop Zombie, St. Bernardus Pater 6 and Steenbrugge Blond.

We were also introduced to the strongest beer on Earth: Snake Venom. If you drink it all, you’ll probably feel like a snake really bit you at 67.5% alcohol and at 1600 RMB per bottle, it’ll also consume your wallet.

Our hosts were kind enough to offer us a complimentary liter of some locally brewed IPA, which they expect to be regularly available. In all, we paid 300 RMB for 6 beers. Bottoms up!
