Batou Business Struggles

After months of slack business, seven bar owners relinquished their contracts in March, marking a shuffling in this small village loaded with more than 70 bars. “Now we hardly make ends meet,” said Chasel, owner of Unique. “The high rent is forcing us out. But we are trying to come up with coupons to attract customers.” Some say that homogenized business plans have matched bars in vicious competition. Mr. Yang, owner of a Batou coffee shop, says that the village’s appeal originated from an art gallery/café designed by a local artist.
